Read it in 2 days, what more can I say! November 19, 2008 Ana Lissansky (Ottawa, ON) I'm an avid reader, but this is the first time I've been so drawn to a story, I just had to read this quickly, and when it was over, I only wanted to read more!
The Lion And The Lamb November 19, 2008 Dee (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) I'm a latecomer to the "Twilight" series, but I just finished reading the first book, and I have to say, it was a page turner from start to finish. I have purchased the rest of the books, and cannot wait to start reading again. I am very anxious to see the movie when it comes out this weekend, and I'm trusting that it lives up to the hype, and also the expectations that fans of the book have been anticipating. There wasn't one dull moment in this book, I had a very hard time putting it down.
I hope that the movie will capture the true chemistry and emotion between Edward and Bella, that Stephenie Meyer made us feel in the book. Maybe it was a certain look between the two of them, or the unspoken love that they both felt, whatever it was that gripped us in the book, it is important that we experience that again as we watch their lives unfold on the big screen. The chemistry between these two actors has to be present on screen, or something will be greatly lost in the movie. Judging by the previews I've seen so far, I feel that they will not disappoint the fans. I believe that Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart will deliver two characters so emotionally charged, that it will leave us all begging for the future sequels.
I disagree with any statements that this is a book that will only appeal to teenagers. I am WAY WAY past my teenage years, and this is one of the best books I have ever read. I cannot speak for the next three books as I have yet to read them, but I feel that they will be equally as good, and as captivating as the first. Whether the person reading is young, or young at heart, this first book gives the reader a sense of hope, that true love and romance is still alive, and that there might actually be someone willing to die for the person they love, and always be at their side to protect them. Okay, yes, it's just a novel, but it gives us all a reason to dream, and maybe escape for a few hours from life in the real world. Edward and Bella may yet be the greatest couple ever created, and I cannot wait to see what transpires as their incredible story continues.
Disappointingly painful November 12, 2008 Christian Major (Montreal, Canada) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Twilight and its sequels took the teen horror romance sub-genre by storm, and it is easily understandable why; while Stephanie Meyer undoubtedly has some skills weaving a good narrative, her subject matter is hopelessly mundane and lacking in good foresight.
One dares think that the vast majority of the abilities, traits and twists she uses in her book, while arguably appropriate, are fraught with stereotypical views worthy of any tortured goth-like tween, and her main character's unsurprising battered woman syndrome attribute does nothing to alleviate the weight of this impending feeling of "I know where this is going" waiting to crush you like an obese vampire hungry for blood after a month of forced starvation.
I recommend this book only as a study of what to do to become an instant success in an increasingly populated literary niche, and what not to do in order to avoid imposing yet another pedestrian, impossible vampire/human romance book unto the world.
A fun, light read that's not just for teens. November 9, 2008 GinRobi (Timmins, ON, Canada) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
At first, I wasn't sure what to make of Bella. As a seventeen-year-old with divorced parents, I thought her quite mature... considering she had pretty much fended for herself and her mother, who is very forgetful and eccentric. And now she's going to visit her father in his small hometown of Forks, Washington. She doesn't want to go - she hates it there - but she's determined.
While she makes friends easily enough, but for some reason becomes fascinated with Edward Cullen. He, and his brothers and sisters, aren't like the rest of the students, and for some strange reason, he seems to dislike her - extremely. And she can't figure out what she's done to be on the receiving end of such dislike. But what she doesn't know is that Edward is attracted to her as well, and is fighting it; fighting it hard.
As their relationship grows, Bella figures out what Edward really is: a vampire. Does it frighten her? Not in the least. Edward doesn't frighten her at all. She wants to know more about him and his family, for the more time they spend together, the more she's falling in love with him. And he is falling in love with her.
But she's determined to get to know him, and fighting it was futile for Edward. And so, he showed her - everything but feeding. I was kind of glad about that - may have been too soon for a first novel, I think.
It was fun watching their relationship grow. I think my favourite part was in the restaurant, where, no matter how much the waitress flirted, Edward only had eyes and attention for Bella. He reminded me very much of my husband, who does the exact same thing. He takes me to restaurants to spend time with me, away from home and kids, not flirt with the staff. I like that and can't get enough of it.
I liked the idea of being in Bella's head while you're experiencing everything with the main character. You'll find Edward just as complex as Bella does. The writing is clear and precise, easy to follow (almost a little too easy). However, I think there could have been more...
Bella has Edward and quite a few males in her class drooling over her, even though she doesn't find herself pretty. I think the author should boost her self-esteem a little. Sure, everyone complains about their looks, but I was kind of getting tired of Bella's reaction and non-reaction. Edward and his family are portrayed as `perfect'. I think the author should have added flaws for them... perfect becomes very boring very quickly and I was getting tired reading about perfect hair, perfect eyes, perfect body, perfect everything. I found that, by the middle of the book, I had to force myself a little too keep going; my attention was wandering. As a bookaholic, that's not a good thing for me. I need substance, action, a little more intrigue, to keep me going.
Despite that, I thought it a light, fun read. Did I like it? Sure, for what it was. Will I continue with the series? More than likely... I'm curious to see where the series goes.
Overrated but mildly amusing November 2, 2008 Red 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I heard all the hype about this series and decided to make my own opinion.
Perhaps it was all the applause for the novel that had my hopes so high. But, by the end of the novel I was mad. I endured nearly 300 pages of fluff and repetitive conversations to MISS out on the finale?? What was Stephanie Meyer thinking?
*SPOILER*
Did she reach the major action scene at the end where we could see actual blood fly and go, "I'm soooo bored, I want inane conversation again...lets have her pass out so no one sees him die." THEN she has it told that the brothers killed him instead of Edward himself? Dear GAWD.
I can't even explain the amount of disappointment I held when I read the last pages of that novel. I decided not to move on with the series and leave it to the fans.
There must be some appeal to the novel otherwise it wouldn't be nearly as popular.
Cudo's should be awarded to Stephanie Meyer for having her debut novel coming out with such a bang. I just don't think I'll go for another book of hers any time soon.
